BestColleges.com recently published an article examining the closure of colleges and the underlying reasons. Their analysis revealed that 78% of the shuttered institutions were for-profit, while 21% belonged to private nonprofit sectors, and less than 1% represented public institutions, primarily in the form of online programs. Furthermore, approximately 53% of the closed colleges were two-year establishments, with the remaining 47% being four-year institutions.Among the identified causes for closure were issues with accreditation, financial instability, dwindling enrollment figures, mergers with other institutions, and the disruptive impact of the pandemic.Considering this alongside my earlier post about college graduates facing challenges in securing employment within their field, one might speculate whether we've reached a tipping point in the pursuit of degrees as prerequisites for entry-level positions.

Deciding where to apply for graduate school this year? 🤔 💭💰🏛️Consider these 6 aspects:✅ Research interests of the faculty: Go through the research papers of the faculty members that seem interesting to you and ask yourself the following questions: - Is there anything I can contribute to this project? - What is unique about this work? - Does this align with the research experiences/knowledge I already have? - How will this kind of project advance my knowledge and skills? If you answer positively to at least two of these questions, it may be worth considering this faculty (and the department). ✅ The structure of the program. Generally, you will benefit most by collaborating with academics/industry leaders that share similar research interests. Check out if the department offers exposure to interdisciplinary work & industrial settings.✅ What are the current students saying about the program? It’s wise to email existing graduate school students of the department to assess if they think their expectations are being met, if the environment is conducive to growth etc. The satisfaction level of current grad students could be a good predictor of how fulfilling the journey would be for you.✅ What is the structure of the program? What percentage of the program focuses on coursework and what percentage emphasises research & make your decision based on your preference for research versus taught programs.✅ Cold-email professors to see if they are interested in supervising you. In most cases, you need a supervisor to guide you through the research aspect of the program (i.e., thesis). Emailing supervisors with your research interests can inform you about -whether they have space for an additional grad student -how well you can align with the lab-tips on succeeding in the application process -also, you may inquire them about fee waivers/test waivers if you need them✅ Last but not the least, you need to check out the eligibility criteria. - GPA - Test scores - Program equivalency - Financial statements (if applicable)Will you consider these factors while applying to grad school?#graduate #gradschool #successtips #cv #coverletter #research #statementofpurpose #coverletter #motivation

Beyond the Paper: Cultivating True Education. In a world where degrees adorn walls and accolades fill resumes, it's easy to forget that education extends far beyond the confines of a certificate. Your degree may open doors, but it's your behavior that leaves a lasting impression.Dear LinkedIn Community,As we celebrate academic achievements and milestones, let's remember that our degrees are merely symbols of our dedication to learning. While they hold significance, true education transcends the boundaries of classrooms and textbooks.Your behavior, your actions, and your interactions with others are the true indicators of your education. How you treat colleagues, how you handle challenges, and how you contribute to your community speak volumes about your character and values.Regardless of the letters behind your name or the institutions you've attended, it's your integrity, empathy, and ethical conduct that define you as a professional and as a person. Your ability to listen, collaborate, and lead with compassion is what sets you apart in today's competitive landscape. So, as we pursue our academic endeavors and professional aspirations, let's never lose sight of the importance of character and virtue. Let's strive to embody the principles of lifelong learning, humility, and kindness, for it is through these qualities that we truly make an impact in the world.Remember, your degree is just a paper. Your education is seen in your behavior.Feel free to share your thoughts and experiences on this topic. Let's inspire each other to embrace the essence of true education! #Education #Character #ProfessionalDevelopment #LifelongLearning

I help researchers do more than they thought possible.

If you haven't worked with professional academics for over a decade it is hard to fathom how much they undervalue their skills. If you have worked with them for that long then you know it's almost impossible to overstate how serious this problem is.Every fall, my office hosts an academic job search series and we try and recruit a mix of panelists ranging from new faculty to seasoned admins.I reached out to the graduate liaisons in different programs and asked them who in their programs they would recommend and then reached out accordingly. One faculty member, who had just chaired a search committee for new faculty told me that "I couldn't possibly be qualified because I've only ever worked here so I haven't been on that job market that much." But, ma'am! You just lead your department's search!!!This happened several times with established professors and, most notably, with a VP who said, "I don't have the expertise you need because I've worked in student affairs not academic affairs, but I was recently on the search committee of some great new faculty you should contact!"He didn't even realize that in disqualifying himself he had actually proved his qualifications.Academics care about niches and specialties and they don't feel comfortable stepping outside of those things even when imminently qualified for the task at hand. This is something that is *crucial* to understand if you are working with PhDs who are transitioning from the academy to industry. They will underestimate and discount themselves and you can't let them!#phd #academic #jobmarket #highered #a2i

Mr. Pavan Sathiraju,Excellent points made by you, especially the part - "every mark counts", particularly in a highly competitive field.Unless and until you are making a complete transition from a salaried working professional to an entrepreneur or a start-up founder, your marks, ranks, and degrees do count, and sometimes, in more ways than you can possibly imagine. This is because it is natural human tendency to attach greater importance to professional and educational pedigree. If a prospective candidate is an MBA from an Ivy League Institute or any of the IIM's, or an engineering graduate from the IIT's, the scales will be tilted considerably in his/her favour vis-à-vis other candidates, who may not have such educational credentials. As human beings, we have a proclivity to give a somewhat greater importance to anything and everything which is reputed, famous, and big. Not only degrees, the presence of eminent and reputed brands on any candidate's CV makes him/her a clear winner, both in reality as well as in perception. This also explains why so many LinkedIn professionals prominently mention the names of their previous organisations on their profiles, as well as their degrees and even ranks in professional and major examinations. These are the supposed "badges of honour" which we tend to hang on to long after our innings is over.
