10 First Stop: Manitou Depot
To catch the train to the Pikes Peak Summit, visitors must go to the Manitou Depot. It’s here where travelers can park their car, use the restroom, grab a bite to eat, and shop for locomotive-related collectibles.
Staff at the Manitou Depot can also assist travelers with any questions related to the train ride.
NOTE: Though there is a parking lot across Manitou Depot, spaces are limited and are likely to be full during peak season. Thus, many people resort to parking at Hiawatha Gardens (in Manitou Springs) and catching a shuttle to the station.
9 Anticipate The Changes In Elevation!
The Pikes Peak Cog Railway will take riders to the Pikes Peak Summit, which stands at over 14,115 feet! Thus, guests should anticipate changes in altitude, with some experiencing side effects from this change.
Visitors (regardless of age or physical fitness level) may experience nausea, dizziness, or light-headedness. It’s recommended to reserve time to acclimate oneself to the high altitudes of Manitou Depot before progressing to the Pikes Peak Summit.
Additionally, visitors should keep well-hydrated and drink water to avoid any unpleasant symptoms of changing elevations.
NOTE: Though there are no age restrictions to ride the train, the ride is not suitable for infants under six months of age or people with a history of cardiac or respiratory medical issues due to changing altitudes.
8 Dress For The Weather At The Summit
Manitou Springs may be lovely during the summer, but even during warm months, Pikes Peak can get chilly due to being a high-altitude destination.
In fact, the weather can even drop up to 20 degrees on certain days! Before heading out, dress appropriately for the summit, which may include wearing a sweater, bringing a jacket, and putting on a warm hat (depending on the season).
7 There’s A LOT To See Along The Way
Though the highlight of the train ride is the Pikes Peak Summit, the ride itself is a treat for the senses! During the ride, be sure to admire the beauty of Colorado’s mountain ranges, the vast boulder fields, and the diverse local wildlife.
Along the way, riders will also come across landmarks like Minnehaha Falls, Ruxton Creek, Englemann Canyon, Diamond Rock, and much more!
6 There Is A Seasonal Schedule For The Train
Though the Pikes Peak Cog Railway operates year-round, the departure and arrival schedule changes depending on the season. For instance, during the summer, the train departs every 40 minutes daily.

5 Some Things Are NOT Allowed On The Train
There are some considerations to account for riding the Pikes Peak Cog Railway. Firstly, due to the limited space capacity inside the train, bikes and strollers are not allowed on board.
Additionally, excluding service animals, the train is not a pet-friendly accommodation.
4 Learn Something At The Pikes Peak Visitor Center
The Pikes Peak Visitor Center is one of the park’s newest facilities, offering interactive exhibits that showcase region's history, geography, and climate.
The center also houses unparalleled views of the summit while providing facilities like restrooms, complimentary Wi-Fi, and eateries for restless travelers. Before heading back to Manitou Depot, take a stretch and explore this spacious visitor center.
3 Try The Pikes Peak Donuts!
Besides appreciating the view, don’t forget to try the Summit’s famous donuts! These donuts may look ordinary, but they’re the only ones made at 14,000 feet in the world.
Besides being delicious, these donuts are best enjoyed at the summit itself; take a few of these sweet snacks down the mountain, and they’ll deflate from the changing elevation, losing their airy texture!
